Information if you've sold your car
If you have sold your car and it was taxed, you are due a refund.
To discontinue your vehicle tax obligations, inform the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) promptly of any instances where your vehicle has been either sold or transferred, taken off the road and kept in storage (referred to as a Statutory Off Road Notification or SORN), written off by your insurance company, scrapped at a vehicle scrapyard, stolen (a separate refund application is required), exported out of the UK, or registered as exempt from vehicle tax. It is imperative to note that there is no alternative method for canceling your vehicle tax.
Upon receipt of the relevant information, DVLA will cancel your vehicle tax and, if you are a Direct Debit payer, the automatic cancellation of the Direct Debit will follow suit. Subsequently, you will receive a refund cheque covering any remaining full months of vehicle tax. The refund calculation is initiated from the date DVLA processes the provided information, and the cheque is dispatched to the individual named in the vehicle log book.
It is essential to be aware that the refund does not encompass credit card fees, and there are surcharges applicable to certain direct debit payments.
In the event of a refund pertaining to the first tax payment on the vehicle, the amount refunded is determined by the lesser of the initial tax payment upon vehicle registration and the subsequent tax payment rate. Should your refund be delayed, it is advised to contact DVLA if the cheque remains undelivered after an 8-week period.
